October Is...

What’s scarier than ghosts and ghouls haunting you this All Hallows Eve?  It might be the frankenfood lurking in your child’s candy basket.

Conservative estimates indicate that 70% of the packaged foods sold in the U.S. contain some form of genetically modified organism (GMO).  In large part, this can be attributed to the genetically modified corn used to manufacture high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), present in most of the candy that will be offered this time of year.

Coincidentally, October is also officially Non-GMO Month.  Non-GMO Month was created in 2010 by the Non-GMO Project to foster awareness of our genetically modified food supply and emphasize the shopper’s right to know.

In conjunction with their campaign for education and transparency throughout the food supply, the Non-GMO Project provides the only independent, standardized verification and labeling of Non-GMO grocery products in North America.  Since the organization’s inception in 2005, sales of Non-GMO verified products have increased exponentially.  Despite the opposition to the Non-GMO movement by large conglomerates like the Grocery Manufacturers Association, it is clear, that people across the country are craving choice and calling for change.

Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss has always been Non-GMO and has been a verified product since 2011.  We are proud to count our brand among the hundreds of products available that uphold this high standard.  You can find a complete listing of verified products here.  You may also find this resource helpful in planning your festivities.

This Halloween and for the season to come, we encourage you to choose foods that are more cozy than creepy and look for the Non-GMO verified logo on all of your purchases.
